Unfortunately, for fans of the wilderness survival horror game, it appears that Sons of the Forest won’t be coming this year at all. Indie Developer Endnight Games recently announced that it is further delaying Sons of the Forest until February 23, 2023. And while the studio’s justifications seem reasonable, it’s still bad news for fans of The Forest.

Endnight announced the latest delay over Twitter on Wednesday, along with an announcement that the game will retail for $29.99 when it finally releases next year. Developers explained the delay by saying that the team needed more time to give the upcoming Sons of the Forest the polish it deserves. The studio also attributed the multiple delays to the upcoming game’s larger scope, which makes it more difficult for developers to estimate how much work is remaining.
It’s understandable that a smaller studio like Endnight might have its hands full with a big project like Sons of the Forest. Still, it’s also understandable that fans aren’t particularly pleased with this news. There were still plenty of positive comments in the tweet’s replies, with some fans saying that The Forest was good enough to make its sequel worth waiting for a little longer. Others, however, seem to have lost their enthusiasm for the thrice-delayed game. Hopefully, the tweet is accurate when it describes delaying Sons of the Forest “one last time.”
Endnight Games’ Sons of the Forest follows a similar premise to its predecessor, with players tasked with surviving in a remote, mutant-infested wilderness. After a rescue mission goes wrong, the protagonist must fight, forage, and build to survive the elements and the island’s inhabitants. New features include changing seasons, affecting the available resources for players to collect, and the hazards they’ll need to manage. For example, food will be plentiful during Spring and Summer. However, Winter brings scarcity, and players must ration their resources while fending off bands of hungry mutants.
As with its predecessor, Sons of the Forest also boasts optional co-op gameplay, letting players team up to survive and explore the deadly wilderness. It also launches with full controller support. However, while some people were asking about it over Twitter, developers haven’t indicated any intentions of bringing Sons of the Forest to consoles.
Sons of the Forest releases for PC on February 23, 2023.

title: “Horror Game Sons Of The Forest Release Date Delayed” ShowToc: true date: “2022-12-27” author: “Dennis Hill”
First announced in 2019, Sons of the Forest initially targeted a late 2021 release before shifting to early 2022. Sons of the Forest is the sequel to the breakout indie horror game, The Forest, in which players must survive in a forest filled with humanoid monsters and various horrors in order to get their son back. Endnight Studios’ Sons of the Forest will feature new enemies, enhanced weather mechanics, and greatly enhanced A.I., making this an ambitious project.

Today, Endnight Studios took to its official Twitter page to announce that Sons of the Forest has been delayed from May 2022 to October 2022. This decision appears to have been made only within the last few weeks as Endnight Games realized that its vision for Sons of the Forest is “overly ambitious.” Endnight’s tweet also contains a five-second snippet of the game for fans eager to see what the studio has been working on since its last update in November of last year.
Although news of the delay may disappoint fans who have been waiting since 2019 to get their hands on the game, Endnight does seem to be promising big things from Sons of the Forest. The studio’s delay announcement also states that this delay is in favor of its “vision of the next step in survival games.” 2014’s The Forest was already a remarkably ambitious and dynamic open-world survival horror, and it is clear that Endnight Studios intends to keep pushing the genre forward, as expressed in this tweet.
Since its reveal in 2019, Endnight Studios has been stingy in showing content for its upcoming game. Sons of the Forest has had very few trailers since its debut, and the trailers released are composed of brief, often cryptic snippets under a minute and a half in length. Other times, Endnight can be found posting screenshots of the game via Twitter, but never in a regular cadence. Endnight Games is a small studio with large ambitions; how those ambitions will manifest and what Sons of the Forest will bring to the survival genre is something players will have to wait until October to discover.
Sons of the Forest is in development for PC.
