As the first House of the Dragon episode premiered, social media was flooded with complaints of customers not being able to watch the highly anticipated series due to technical issues. The outages seemed to have affected at least 3,000 customers (via The Hollywood Reporter), with many sending direct tweets to the streaming service to highlight the issue. HBO Max was quick to address the complaints and clarified that apparently only the customers using Fire TV devices were affected.

In a statement sent out to the press, HBO Max revealed that House of the Dragon was being “successfully viewed by millions of HBO Max subscribers.” But, the service also confirmed that “a small portion of users attempting to connect via Fire TV devices” were experiencing issues. As the situation got worse, HBO Max took the opportunity to address the popularity of the series, and tweeted “The only thing that could tear down the House of the Dragon was itself.” Obviously, the tweet didn’t sit well with the customers who were experiencing outages, and the comments section is filled with complaints.
After realizing what the issue was, HBO Max started responding to customer tweets, offering solutions to fix the problem. “Please try closing the app and restarting to see if this helps,” was one recommendation by the streaming service. When it didn’t seem to work, they offered an alternative. “If you’re having difficulties streaming the premiere on your Firestick please go to any other show/movie on HBO Max, turn off subtitles/captions, and then try streaming House of the Dragon again,” read the next suggestion. Customers weren’t sure how subtitles were affecting the service, but they weren’t pleased either way.
House of the Dragon arrived more than three years after the Game of Thrones finale premiered. The series, which is considered one of HBO Max’s biggest hits, was based on the book series written by George R. R. Martin. The prequel is also based on Martin’s Fire & Blood, and while it is set over a century prior to the events of Game of Thrones, it also focuses on “the battle for succession to the Iron Throne.”
House of the Dragon is streaming on HBO Max.
