House of the Dragon is actually not based on the main A Song of Ice and Fire book series. Instead, it’s based on supplementary material that was released in Fire & Blood, a novel written by Martin, which is considered an in-universe history as told by the Maesters of Westeros. House of the Dragon is supposed to cover Targaryen history, while A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones take place after the dragon-riding dynasty has been overthrown.

In a video call to the convention, which was posted in part to Twitter by a journalist present at the panel, Condal spoke a bit about House of the Dragon. He then later revealed that Martin, who is frequently involved in the production of the series, has told him a few tidbits about what will happen in future novels:
Though Game of Thrones aired its contentious series finale nearly four years ago, A Song of Ice and Fire is actually not a finished book series. The last installment, A Dance With Dragons, was released back in 2011. There are still two more installments to go, and Condal mentioned that he was rooting for Martin to finish the series, which first hit shelves in 1996.
Interestingly, Condal also mentioned a theory that he personally subscribes to within the world of the books. In A Dance With Dragons, it is revealed that Aegon Targaryen, Jon Snow’s half-brother via their father Rhaegar Targaryen, is seemingly alive. He’s no dragon rider like his aunt, Daenerys, but being a male technically places him above her in the line of inheritance, and he begins an invasion of Westeros to reinstate the Targaryen dynasty.
A popular fan theory holds that Aegon Targaryen is actually not who he claims - he’s actually (whether knowingly or not) a pretender from House Blackfyre, a Targaryen off-shoot branch that has launched more than a few rebellions in Westeros, but which was presumed extinct by the time of the novels. George R.R. Martin’s works often include historical allusions; much of A Song of Ice and Fire is based on the historic War of the Roses between Houses York and Lancaster. In this instance, Martin would be making a parallel between Perkin Warbeck, who was a pretender for the English throne at that time, and Aegon Targaryen. Evidently, Condal believes in this theory, but he carefully mentions that it’s not something Martin has talked to him about.
